Context
Safeswim provides real-time water quality information to the public, making accuracy, transparency, and trust critical.

Safeswim relies on a public website to communicate water quality and safety information in near real time. While this improves accessibility, it introduces challenges around how that information is managed over time.

As content and data are continuously updated, historical states are lost unless actively preserved. This creates risk when responding to public enquiries, auditing decisions, or validating how information was presented at a specific point in time.

Without a structured approach to preservation, information can become difficult to retrieve, costly to manage, and unreliable as a record. This has implications for compliance, operational efficiency, and public trust.

The challenge was to move from a reactive model, where information is treated as a by-product of the website, to one where it is captured, preserved, and trusted as a long-term asset.

Approach
We designed a digital preservation approach that captures the Safeswim website over time and makes it accessible as a reliable record.

The solution uses automated web crawling to capture snapshots of the Safeswim website at regular intervals, preserving both content and the context in which it was presented.

These snapshots are stored in the WARC (Web ARChive) format, an international standard designed for long-term preservation and portability across systems.

Each snapshot includes associated metadata and integrity checks, ensuring that records can be verified and trusted over time.

The platform provides a simple interface for exploring historical versions of the site, allowing users to navigate by date and view past states in a familiar way.

The approach decouples information from the live system, ensuring it remains accessible even as underlying technologies change or evolve

The solution provides a trusted historical record of Safeswim data, supporting transparency, compliance, and future insight.

Historical snapshots can now be accessed quickly and accurately, reducing the effort required to respond to public enquiries and audits.

The archive provides a high-fidelity record of how information was presented at specific points in time, increasing confidence in the integrity of the data.

By preserving both content and context, the platform supports traceability and accountability in how water quality information is communicated.

There is also an opportunity to use this historical data to evaluate model performance over time, providing insights into accuracy and helping identify potential issues upstream.
